What are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are natural organic substances which are produced in various glands and sacs within aromatic plants. These oils are stored in every part of the plant, externally and internally. The extracted oils carry "Essential" organic therapeutic compounds of the plant. These oils are found in flowers, like roses, leaves like eucalyptus, zest like oranges and lemons, resin like frankincense, bark like cinnamon and so on.

Essential oils are extracted from the plant by two main methods, distilling and expression. the process of distilling is using water over fire, in a separate vat, to produce steam to vaporize water and essential oils from the plant. These vapors and oils are then put through a cold water, hot water process, dividing the water and essential oil. The water is known as Floral Water and the essential oils is a True Essential.

The process of expression extractions expressed mechanically. Machinery is used to pressure squeeze the oil out of the plant. Citrus peel is commonly extracted by expression very easily. Have you ever noticed the second you peel an orange or a grapefruit you are sprayed with a citrus scent? That is the organic oils coming out of the fruit.

Aromatic extracts are extracted by solvent extractions, "Enfleurage". Tinctures on the other hand are obtained by maceration with alcohol, solvent is extracting with the use of a liquid or gas. Liquid being water and gas being an organic chemical, carbon hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, etc. Enfleurage is the use of odorless solid fats that are mixed with aromatic plant substances and allowed to diffuse for several days. This process is repeated to acquire the desired fragrance, by replacing the aromatic plant substance often.

The optimum shelf life is 1 - 2 years but if stored correctly, in a dark bottle in a cool environment, they will last 4 years or more. Our oils are offered by the 1/2oz & 4oz.
